I have reached a dead end …
In “windows server 2016 training for beginners” course by paul hill / lecture 55, he used ITFROUTE01 server (vm) to link two DCs across two subnets.
My question is: can we consider ITFROUTE01 is the equivalent of a cisco router, that is if we use a cisco router can we omit ITFROUTE01? Do they do the same job?
Please help.

When you install that role it can route traffic somewhat similar to a Cisco Router. But interfacing with a Cisco router and Windows Server are obviously two completely different things.
